This month marks 150 years of transit in London, from horse-drawn carriages to modern, eco-friendly buses, London Transit has come a long way since its first ride in 1875. “A lot has changed since that first day of service back in 1875,” noted London Transit’s General Manager, Kelly Paleczny “but what hasn’t changed is our dedication to providing Londoners with a reliable and affordable transit service that gets them where they need to go.”

In recognition of the celebration, Mayor Josh Morgan said, “For 150 years, London Transit has been a vital part of our city’s growth and daily life – connecting people to work, school, and each other. This milestone is a testament to the dedication of generations of transit workers and to the importance of reliable, accessible public transportation in building a thriving, inclusive London. Congratulations to everyone at London Transit on this remarkable anniversary.”

And there’s a lot of history to look back on, as Commission Chair Skylar Franke states, London Transit, known as the London Street Railway Company in 1875, carried 158,154 riders that first year; today with the help of an incredible team, we carry 19.2 million Londoners annually! We are proud to have provided this crucial service for 150 years and look forward to an exciting future ahead”.

Thank you Londoners for supporting transit for 150 years! Whether heading to school, work or a weekend trip downtown, London Transit has proudly been a part of your daily commute for a century and a half!
