Through London Transit’s Accessibility Committee, a concern was raised with respect to where passengers are to wait and board their bus specifically at rapid transit stations. We recognize that it is especially difficult for riders with disabilities such as visual impairments to know where they are to wait when more than one route is serviced at a stop and buses sometime line up behind one another.
As a temporary measure, all rapid transit stations are now equipped with a temporary bus stop pole which lines up with the pillar at the furthest point of the shelter (in the direction you are traveling). The temporary pole sits on a rubber base that is cane detectable to assist passengers in locating the correct location to wait for the bus.
As with other multi-route stops, Operators are instructed to ensure they pull up to the bus stop plate location, open the door so that the external announcement plays to completion and ensure that the stop is cleared before departing. Buses are expected to wait until the vehicle in front of them has cleared the stop to ensure that they can pull fully forward to the designated boarding area.
London Transit continues to work with the City of London is assessing improved wayfinding solutions to better accommodate passengers of all abilities to easily know where to stand to catch the bus.
